Infiniti Airbags And Seat Belts Problems

It didn’t take long for the 2019 QX50 to get its first recall.

More than 1,670 model year 2019 Infiniti QX50 SUVs are recalled because the passenger-side knee airbag covers may detach when the airbags deploy in cold temperatures.

Nissan announced the 2002 QX4 and Pathfinder need their front, passenger-side airbag inflators replaced. This is important, but there's a catch.

It's only 46 vehicles. Affected owners should be notified by mail, but you can also grab your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and call 800-647-7261.

Oh, airbags. Either they're deploying with too much force and possibly killing us. Or not deploying when they should and possibly killing us.

More than 500 of the 2017 QX30 are being recalled because their Autoliv airbags fall into the latter category. It's a similar issue to this BMW recall earlier this month.

Please don't let this be the new Takata.…

Nissan and Infiniti are recalling an additional 152,500 passenger-side, frontal airbag inflators. Like before, the recall is being split into "zones" which you can read about on CarComplaints.com.

Earlier this month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) told everyone to expect a Takata recall expansion of 35-40 million vehicles.

And now, it's happening. Of those 35 million, Nissan and Infiniti are recalling 402,000 cars. Nissan says the 2005-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45, 2003-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2006-2010 Infiniti M35 and M45 and 2007-2011 Nissan Versa vehicles are recalled if originally sold or ever registered in zone A.

Anyone else getting the feeling there's a major issue with Nissan and Infiniti's Occupant Classification System (OCS)?

For roughly the 103rd time, Nissan announced an OCS recall. The difference is this one is a doozy at 3.8 million vehicles. Nissan says the occupant classification systems in the front passenger seats can turn off because the systems classify an adult as a child or classify a seat as empty even if an adult is in the seat.

That will disable the airbags for someone who really needs it. But there's something else.…

The OCS mop-up continues as complaints continue to pour in about an airbag warning light that won't shut off.

Nissan (and Infiniti) is issuing a third recall to fix problems with airbag sensors not recognizing front-seat passengers.

"Nissan blames the problem on a supply chain error that caused incorrect occupant classification control unit parts to be installed on vehicles that received the incorrect part after the March 2014 recall was completed. There are also vehicles that were not part of the March recall but received the wrong part from other repairs."

The latest round includes many Nissan vehicles, as well as the 2013 JX35, 2014-15 QX60, and 2014 QX60 Hybrid.

X35, Q50, QX60, and G27 are all named in a lawsuit against Infiniti's parent company, Nissan, for an allegedly defective Occupant Classification System (OCS). Plaintiff Matthew Senci filed the proposed class-action lawsuit that alleges the vehicles have occupant classification system software that can incorrectly classify a front passenger seat as empty when it's occupied by an adult passenger. The error can cause the airbag to deactivate and fail to deploy in a crash.

Complaints and warranty claims led to the first OCS recall in March 2013, but it was limited to only 83,000 vehicles. Nissan later admitted, however, that the "fix" for that recall didn't work when they expanded the OCS recalls.

The lawsuit, Matthew Senci v. Nissan North America, Inc., accuses the automaker of being deceptive and selling vehicles with known defects.

Roughly 1,800 QX56 and QX80 SUVs have been added to Infiniti's Takata recall list.

The latest recall involves the 2013 model year and is for a slightly different (albeit still dangerous) reason: Although millions of vehicles have been recalled because of metal air bag inflators that can explode, Infiniti says the recall involves Takata air bags that were built with the wrong baffles. The outer baffle can cause internal pressure and that pressure can cause the metal inflator to explode.

Nissan and Infiniti are expanding their Takata recall to include 226,000 additional vehicles

, bringing their grand total to 706,000 following last year's initial recall. This newest recall involves model year 2002-2003 Nissan Maxima, Pathfinder and Infiniti I35 and QX4; 2002-2004 Nissan Sentra and 2003 Infiniti FX vehicles. The problem continues to be the same, dangerous story – the chemicals inside Takata airbag inflators have become unstable, and can explode with such force that they send metal shrapnel flying into the cabin.

The recall is expected to begin in mid-August 2014, but parts might be limited as other automakers have recently expanded their Takata recalls as well.

Last year, the JX35 (along with other Nissan vehicles) was recalled because a defective sensor could fail to detect when an adult passenger was in the seat.

Now Nissan is expanding the recall to 1 million vehicles, including the same 2013 JX35 and the 2014 Q50, and QX60. It also includes many Nissan models. The defective sensor is part of the Occupant Classification System (OCS) that determines if there's an adult, or child, in the passenger seat. When there's an adult, the airbag is supposed to get activated – except it's not working.

"Nissan says a combination of factors could cause the problem, such as high engine vibration at idle when the seat is initially empty and then becomes occupied. Even the posture of the passenger could cause the air bag to deactivate."

So why is the 2013 JX35 getting recalled again? Nissan admits the fix didn't work. Great. Let's hope they have better luck this time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says there are over 3 million vehicles with airbag inflators that explode, sending metal shrapnel into the cabin during an airbag deployment.

While Honda is recalling the most, Nissan (and Infiniti) have recalled over 480,000 vehicles worldwide. That includes the 2001-2003 Infiniti i35 and QX4.

"Takata said the propellant wafers produced at a plant in Moses Lake, Washington, between April 13, 2000 and September 11, 2002, may have been produced with an inadequate compaction force. The propellant could deteriorate over time and cause too much combustion, which could cause the body of the inflator to rupture during air bag deployment."

Vehicles in more humid areas are particularly susceptible to the exploding inflators.

It's been a rough few months for the JX35.

It's been investigated for sudden stops, then it was recalled for a bad gas gauge, and now the 2013 model year's faulty passenger airbag sensor is getting recalled too. Nissan says sensors within the passenger occupant detection system may have been manufactured out of specification which could cause the air bag to be suppressed permanently.

The recall also includes Nissan vehicles and is expected to begin in April 2013.
